It is undeniable that Korea is having its moment. With the exportation of K-pop making a huge impact on the global stage, an indentation of cultural influence on current and future Western generations alike, Korean fashion is following in its footsteps. Seoul Fashion Week, which was once a minor stop in the international roadmap of fashion weeks, has become a hub for young talent and fresh perspectives. More and more buyers are flocking to Korea’s capital every April and October to get a glimpse of what up-and-coming designers are showing and subsequently potentializing on these new opportunities.
Korean street style has become the subject matter of many photographers with stylish Seoulites acting as passing muses through their creativity. As Korea has become a huge market for many Western designers, Korean designers are now doing the same in the Western market. Whereas these designers have previously sustained and grown their sales in the vast domestic market, they are starting to expand their businesses beyond national borders due to increasing global demand for newness. The Selects represents the top ten up-and-coming Korean designers and provides them with maximum exposure to the US market. Acting as a liaison to bridge the gap between designer and retailer, the showroom in Soho, New York will be a collaborative environment.
With a vision that is backed by the Korean government, this initiative goes beyond just fashion but will encompass K-culture in general, with the space hosting various parties, pop-up stores, artist collaborations and exhibitions as well.
